International Conference on Islamic Studies and Social Sciences

“Discovering New Landscape of Islamic Studies and Social Sciences in The Digital Age”

Islamic studies and social sciences are currently facing extraordinary challenges. One of the fundamental challenges is the emergence of the Industrial Revolution 4.0, which causes significant changes and transformation in the social and religious aspects of human societies from the conventional to the digital systems. The Industrial Revolution 4.0 is a developmental phase in human history that impacts religion’s role in society. This technological and digital transformation demands a new religious and social understanding in responding to the massive process of digitalization as can be seen in the phenomena of virtual religious education through You-Tube and other social media, e-court on religious cases, the digitally driven lifestyles of Gen-Z and millennial generation and many others.

Like other societies, Muslim societies in many parts of the world are also facing the significant changes and transformation brought about by the internet and digital revolution. One of the important transformations currently taking place in the Muslim world is the changing landscape of religious authority from conventional authority to digital authority. For example, people who have religious questions used to ask and consult to a Muslim scholar, but nowadays they can easily ask “google” for answers. The emergence of various hoaxes and hate speech in religious expressions that appear on social media is another alarming phenomenon in this heavily digitalized world. To discuss the complex and multiple expressions and articulations of Islam in the digital age is a daunting task that must integrate approaches and perspectives in Islamic studies and social sciences.

Against this backdrop, the Faculty of Islamic Studies of Universitas Islam Indonesia proudly presents International Conference on Islamic Studies and Social Sciences to offer a much-needed forum to explore and discover the changing landscape of Islamic studies and social sciences in the context of the digital age. Additionally, the conference seeks to facilitate exchanges of ideas on how religious doctrines and religious practices have been significantly affected and shaped in the digital era. In this regard, new fields and domains in Islamic studies concerning the digital world need to be explored, examined, and discussed to further understand how Islamic studies shape the contemporary world. Thus, we invite scholars from all over the world to discuss these highly important issues.
